Municipal Island, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Completely under water during the 2008 flood. I took the photo while working on another bridge project in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Permeable Dike in Columbia River Along Highway 4 near Cathlamet, Washington. Wake zone behind the dike and a shear layer emanating from near edge of the dike and from the edge of the light pier.
What I like about this setting is the starkness of the ridge behind the bridge. There is a USGS stream gage located at the I-90 Bridge, which is just upstream from this site.
In-between the northbound and southbound lanes of the US Highway 65 crossing of the Des Moines River. I never tire of observing infrastructure as it resides in the natural environment. On one hand - so out of place. On the other - majestic in scale and function.
Welcome to the stagnation point. All things related to my career in hydraulics and water resources engineering, professional development, consulting, and maybe a few gems regarding the iowa hawkeyes.
